What To Expect With Medication?

Following on from my 3 part series on understanding ADHD, let’s talk about medication.

This is a very common word when you are dealing with ADHD. Love it or hate it, it is there. It is up to you if you wish to introduce medication.

There are many different medications, terms such as Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Dexedrine, Vyvanse and a few more will be common words when talk about medication.

They all have their pros and cons and I recommend that you research these before you start any of them just so you are informed.

Keep in mind however, you will find an awful lot more information about the terrible affects of medication rather than it’s good effects so you will need to look hard for the good side of the medication.

Ask other people who are doing this and get their experience. I run an online support group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ADHD.ASD/

where you can join and ask for opinions on medication.

Medication has the ability to do amazing things to help your child through their day and to function effectively. However there are also many other ways to help in addition or instead of the medication which I will touch on in future blogs.

There are also many side effects with medication which are not so nice.

Finding the right medication and dosage is the key so it may be a bit of trial and error when it first starts.

I will be honest with you and most people who have gone down this path will agree, medication is a hard road. To get the right dosage may be a bit of a rocky road while experiencing ups and downs while you get things right.

You might give it a good go and decide that medication isn’t for you at this time and that is OK. The decision is yours.

Medication may not be right for your child now but it may be later on so don’t discount it entirely.

One think that is always around medication is judgement and I have written another blog on this called ADHD medication – You Can’t Win https://www.beyondthemaze.com.au/adhd-medication-you-cant-win/

You will be judged from some people as a lazy parent if you do medicate and then you will be judged as someone who isn’t doing the right thing for their child if you don’t medicate.

Just remember what every path you choose is the right path for you and your child at this time. Don’t discount anything as things can change dramatically tomorrow, just do what is right for you now and be comfortable with that decision.

If you choose to medicate your children, then speak to your pediatrician about this.
