Kristen is a qualified University, Secondary and Learning Support teacher. Her experience encompasses 9 years of teaching and 12 years of tutoring experience. She currently works as a teacher at the University of the Sunshine Coast, is the author of a book series titled, ‘Living and Learning with ADHD’ and the resident Education Expert at the ‘Beyond the Maze’ website.
At the University, Kristen tutors first year classes, works as a Disability Participation Assistant and is a Postgraduate Researcher. Currently she is finishing her Masters in Education and hopes to continue with a Doctorate in future. She advocates for educating ‘the whole child’ and providing multi-modal support to encourage growth. She believes this approach helps learners thrive – not only in the classroom, but for life.
Living with the conditions of Inattentive ADD, Kristen is perfectly placed to educate and give an insider’s point of view. Her creative thinking often helps to find solutions for learners of all ages and conditions. Parents and teachers often comment that she is like a ‘translator’ and provides a voice for children who cannot always articulate themselves at such a young age.
Beyond the Maze is an exciting venture for Kristen as she gets to help many families and professionals via social media and online courses. Kristen specializes in Learning Support issues and schooling challenges. She writes blogs, creates Youtube videos and runs online courses with creator Paula Burgess.
Kristen has presented and headlined conferences on ADHD, Aspergers, Sensory Processing Disorder, the schooling system and homeschooling. These have taken her from Brisbane to as far as Mildura, Victoria in 2013 on special invitation from the Rotary Club and The Sunraysia Autism Spectrum Support Group. Here she presenter her Aspergers conference ‘ASD Insider Tips’ for parents, teachers and professionals. She also spoke at their Autism Ball, which raised over $30,000 for the families living with Autism and ADHD in the local area. In 2013, she ran a full day ASD Teacher Training workshop in Morayfield for ASD Kidz. Finally, in 2013 she presented weekly Homeschooling Workshops for parents at Aspergers Services Australia in Brisbane.
In 2014 Kristen launched her home-based teaching business, “Sunshine Education Station”, tutoring mainstream and special needs students from Grade One to adult. From 2010-2013 Kristen taught as a Learning Support teacher and Social Skills Facilitator in private practice psychology clinics include Centre for Positive Change (with Dr. Sally Lock), Spectrum Psychology (Natasha Hutchison) and Aspergers Services Australia in Virginia, Brisbane.
Finally, from 2007-2010 Kristen taught High School English, SOSE, Drama and Religion contracts in both public and private schools. This gave Kristen a good understanding of the schooling system and this knowledge helps in her teaching practice and advising current educators.
